We run our Skye Munros events in May and September, when the weather is most reliable. This September we put on two events, both of which were led by Guy Steven, accompanied by Andy Raven of Alba Mountaineering on the second week.
The forecast for our first September event was fabulous. Guy met the group (Johnston, Christina, Alan (famed MunroMoonWalker) and Guy B) at the campsite and aimed for the southern Cuillin on the Tuesday. Thick mist shrouded the peaks, fingers crossed it would burn off as predicted by the MWIS. Up to Sgurr nan Eag and through the mist a stunning inversion greeted the group. Fabulous ! The group continued over Sgurr Dubh Mor to Sgurr Alasdair and returned to the campsite via the Great Stone Shoot and Coire Lagan.
We couldn't get Mr MunroMoonWalker onto the rest of the week as the place was already taken by John. But we hear he got up his desired peaks the following day (read about it here - very amusing the bit about the clothes-wire used as an abseil rope !!!). The next three days went well - the northern Cuillin : Gillean, Bhasteir and Frithe on the Wednesday, Sgurr Mhic Choinnich, the In-Pinn and Sgurr na Banachdich on the Thursday and finally Sgurr a'Mhadaidh and Sgurr a'Ghreadaidh on the Friday - all in sunshine under blue skies ! Christina says : 'commend Guy for his excellent guiding skill, confidence and wry humour, which kept me hopeful that I could complete the whole lot. I wasn't ever sure and there were some really scary bits! Couldn't have asked for a better 4 days out in the hills.' !
The weather for the second week started beautifully, more blue skies for our intrepid would-be mountaineers. Again up the southern Cuillin on the first day - Sgurr nan Eag to Sgurr Dubh Mor and over to Sgurr Alasdair. Thereafter, the forecast was for deterioating weather and it was decided to move the days around, giving the better weather for the trickier summits - ie the In-Pinn and Sgurr Mhic Choinnich. The group got a soaking on the Tuesday while reaching Sgurr a'Mhadaidh and Sgurr a'Ghreadaidh.
I joined the group on the Wednesday to take some pics - in the morning the ridge was shrouded in mist, but would hopefully lift. It didn't completely clear, but the rock did dry out a bit and the guys scrambled up Sgurr Mhic Choinnich, the In-Pinn and Sgurr na Banachdich. The ridge was getting busy, with several groups being guided and lower down Coire Lagan was buzzing with folk clambering over the gabbro. The final day saw our group out on Gillean and its neighbours.
All in all another cracking few days bagging the Cuillin Munros, all peaks bagged. We'll be back there in May 2016 !
