Torridon, Jun'15

Richard was leading a bespoke trip over Beinn Alligin and Liathach in mid-June. Here's his story of the days....

It was a fine day as we met up in the car park for Beinn Alligin with a few midges trying to make an appearance! We made good time climbing up the slopes in rather warm conditions though as we gained height the cloud seemed destined to meet us and though we got some views through the cloud including a golden eagle below us we stayed in the damp misty weather until we emerged at the end of the horns of Alligin. It was a a good day and waterproofs didn't really make an appearance just not quite the summer weather we'd been hoping for really. The rock was good despite the dampness and the four of us made short work of the lovely ridge walk.

We were meeting again on Monday hoping for good weather on Liathach....

As we met up at the start of Liathach the weather forecast was looking better and better and we climbed in warmth and the odd burst of sunshine. The rest day had proved a glorious day and we had all been out enjoying the sunshine so when the weather treated us on Liathach there were lots of happy walkers!

It was a fairly busy day, but we managed to sneak ahead of several large groups and were soon basking in the summit of Spidean a'Coire Leith in the sun with the dramatic pinnacles before us. After scrambling over the quartzite blocks to reach the pinnacles we were soon engrossed in the traverse picking out a good mix of the scrambling on offer on dry rock with nobody near us. It didn't take us long to reach the final sandstone tower and we stopped to take in the fantastic position watching the many other groups behind us start to make there way to the pinnacles. A short walk along the ridge too us to Mullach na Rathain were another rest for food allowed us to enjoy the views as far as Ben Nevis, Outer Hebrides and An Teallach to the north. All that remained was to pick out way carefully down the scree and path back to the road. It was a brilliant day to be scrambling in Torridon!
