Top 10 Challenge for Whizz Kidz, June'11
Some of the guys at Molson Coors were attempting a challenge, with the goal of raising funds for the Whizz Kidz charity. They'd decided to try and get three teams covering the 10 highest peaks in the UK and therefore contacted us for some help. A plan was hatched to have one team in the Cairngorms (for Cairngorm, Ben Macdui, Cairn Toul, Sgor an Lochain Uaine and Braeraich), one team in the Nevis range (Anoach Beag, Aonach Mor, Carn Mor Dearg and Ben Nevis) and another on Ben Lawers on the 18th June. Unseasonal and unsettled weather tried to spoil the trip, but there was no thwarting these determined folk. Bruce Poll and myself helped on the Nevis range. We started the day in fine conditions plodding up grassy slopes onto Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag both in mist, then carefully picked our way down to the col below Carn Mor Dearg. The weather began to close in, so full waterproofs on and we scrambled up onto Carn Mor Dearg. A bit of vertigo tested some members along the arete before a final pull up the boulders on Ben Nevis's eastern shoulder to gain the summit. We hadn't seen anyone else all day until we arrived at the cairns and it was a bit of a shock to not only see so many folk, but also the amount of litter and untidy memorial plaques and stones. Still none of this could put a damper on the ellation of what these guys had achieved ! We contacted the other teams and found out they'd all been successful. Well done !
