Screel Hillrace, 18 Apr'09

The leadersSouth-west of Dumfries and overlooking Auchencairn Bay and the Solway Firth, this fine little hill was the location for the second SHR Championship race for 2009. I'd not been up this before, so we arrived in plenty time to give it a once over before the race. In beautiful conditions, the race initially headed up on some forestry track allowing the field to spread out, before it turned onto a rutted path through dense forest. Out of the forest, the views are superb, but you had to keep and eye on how you placed your feet between the rocks, heather, grass and occasional bog. Over the tops, back in and out of the forest and up another climb, it was time for the descent. Fast and technical - great fun ! A short blast of a race, it was won by Tom Owens in under 29 minutes. My team-mate Jon Ascroft had tripped and fallen a few places behind me at the start of the descent. A simple slip, he'd landed on a rock, dislocated his elbow and had to be airlifted to Dumfries and Galloway A&E. Now in plaster, he should be back running within a couple of weeks tho ! Results here.
